HOPE TOWN JUNIOR SAILING NEWSLETTER April 13 - 17th, 2009 Five-Day Advanced Beginner's Class
During Easter break, we held a five-day morning class for the kids who had shown good progress during our Winter Saturday Session. Eight kids aged 8 to 13 joined us for another windy week in Hope Town! For a couple of days, we were only able to sail in the harbour. However, we sailed at Nathan's Bay the other three days. On Friday, we sailed the boats all the way from the North End to Eagle Rock, a nice down-wind run.
Almost every day, there was enough time and energy left at the end of the class to go to the beach for a while.
The kids learned a lot about their boats this week, including the proper way to switch sides when tacking or jibing, leaving from and returning to shallow water, beam reaching and close reaching, and rigging and unrigging their boats efficiently. Sportsmanship and co-operation was great.
Next on the agenda is the Homer Lowe Regatta in Marsh Harbour on May 9-10. We will have at least two Optis entering from Hope Town, and several Sunfish among the older Hope Town sailors. Boats will come from Nassau, Long Island, Grand Bahama, Black Point, and other islands.
There will be our first Sunfish Class June 22-26 (mornings 9-12) including the Derrick Lee Regatta on June 26th.
During Regatta Time in Abaco, the lay-day of July 10th has been set aside for the Roscoe Thompson Junior Regatta at Cracker P's.
Another Sunfish Class July 20-24, and Opti Sailing during Summer Camp rounds out the picture for the near future.
Since pictures tell the story the best, here are some photos from this past week-----
